A vulnerability in the filesystem of Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker within the IOx Guest Shell to modify the namespace container protections on an affected device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient file permissions. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by modifying files that they should not have access to. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to remove container protections and perform file actions outside the namespace of the container. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability. At the time of publication, this vulnerability affected Cisco devices that were running a vulnerable release of Cisco IOS XE Software and had IOx Guest Shell enabled.

Administrators can determine if IOx Guest Shell is enabled by executing the show app-hosting list privileged command. The following command output shows a device with IOx Guest Shell enabled:

Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory are known to be affected by this vulnerability.
Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XR Software, or Cisco NX-OS Software.
There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
