A vulnerability in Unified Threat Defense (UTD) in Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload. The vulnerability is due to improper validation of IPv6 packets through the UTD feature. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending IPv6 traffic through an affected device that is configured with UTD. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. This vulnerability affects Cisco IOS XE Software if the device has an interface on which UTD with an IPv6 address is enabled and if the device is configured with the Snort IPS feature of Cisco UTD, the URL-based filtering feature of Cisco UTD, or both.

To determine which interfaces have UTD enabled, administrators can log in to the device and use the show platform software utd interfaces CLI command. The output will either return a list of interfaces on which UTD is enabled, or it will state that no interfaces are protected by UTD. The following example shows the output of a device on which UTD is enabled on interface GigabitEthernet1:

If the output of the show platform software utd interfaces command returns an error or states No interfaces are protected by UTD, the device is not affected by the vulnerability described in this advisory. If the device is affected, the administrator should confirm whether IPv6 is enabled for each interface on which UTD is enabled.
Administrators can identify interfaces that have assigned IPv6 addresses by using the show ipv6 interface brief command in the CLI. The following example shows the output of the command on a device that has IPv6 enabled:
If IPv6 is not supported by the software release that is running on a device, using the show ipv6 interface brief command produces an error message. If IPv6 is not enabled on the device, using the show ipv6 interface brief command does not show any interfaces with IPv6 addresses. In either scenario, the device is not affected by the vulnerability that is described in this advisory. If IPv6 is enabled on one of the UTD-enabled interfaces, the administrator should confirm that a UTD feature (either Snort IPS or URL-based filtering) is enabled.Router#show ipv6 interface brief

To determine whether the Snort IPS or the URL-based filtering feature is enabled for a device, administrators can log in to the device and use the show utd engine standard status CLI command.
If the command returns either UTD IDS/IPS and URL Filtering are both disabled or does not return any output, the device does not have the Snort IPS or URL-based filtering feature enabled and is not affected by the vulnerability that is described in this advisory. If UTD is not supported by the software release that is running on a device, using the show utd engine standard status command produces an error message, and the device is not affected by the vulnerability that is described in this advisory.
If the command returns output similar to that shown in the following example, the device is configured with the Snort IPS feature, the URL-based filtering feature, or both. In this case, the device is affected by the vulnerability that is described in this advisory:

Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory are known to be affected by this vulnerability.
Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XR Software, or Cisco NX-OS Software.
There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Customers may only install and expect support for software versions and feature sets for which they have purchased a license.
