A vulnerability in the CLI of Cisco ThousandEyes Enterprise Agent, Virtual Appliance installation type, could allow an authenticated, local attacker to elevate privileges to root on an affected device. This vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of user-supplied CLI arguments. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to an affected device and using crafted commands at the prompt. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands as root. The attacker must have valid credentials on the affected device. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability. Cisco has released free software updates that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Customers with service contracts that entitle them to regular software updates should obtain security fixes through their usual update channels.

Cisco ThousandEyes Enterprise virtual appliances run an Ubuntu Linux server and have the unattended upgrades package installed by default, ensuring that all critical security fixes are automatically installed. Unattended upgrades require access to the internet and to the Ubuntu repositories.
The Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) validates only the affected and fixed release information that is documented in this advisory.
