Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Unauthorized Access Vulnerability

Summary

• Devices running Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) software versions 7.6.120.0 or later, 8.0 or later, or 8.1 or later contain an unauthorized access vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to modify the configuration of the device.
  
  An attacker who can connect to an affected device could exploit this vulnerability. A successful exploit may compromise the device completely. Customers are advised to upgrade to a version of Cisco WLC software that addresses this vulnerability.
  
  There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
  
  Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability.

  This vulnerability affects the following standalone controllers when they are running an affected version of Cisco WLC software:

  • Cisco 2500 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco 5500 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco 8500 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco Flex 7500 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco Virtual Wireless Controllers

  
  This vulnerability affects the following modular controllers when they are running an affected version of Cisco WLC software:

  • Cisco Services-Ready Engine (SRE), specifically the Integrated Services Module 300, SRE 700, SRE 710, SRE 900, and SRE 910
  • Cisco Wireless Services Module 2 (WiSM-2)

  
  To determine which version of Cisco WLC software is running on a device, use the web or command-line interface (CLI):
  
  

  • In the web interface, click the Monitor tab, and then click Summary in the left pane. The Software Version field shows the current software version.
  • In the CLI, use the show sysinfo command. The following example shows the results for a device running Cisco WLC software version 8.0.120.0:

  No other Cisco products are currently known to be affected by this vulnerability.

  The following IOS XE-based wireless controllers are not affected by this vulnerability:
  

  • Cisco 3600 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco 3800 Series Wireless Controllers
  • Cisco 5700 Series Wireless LAN Controllers

Workarounds

• There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Fixed Software

• When considering software upgrades, customers are advised to consult the Cisco Security Advisories and Responses archive at http://www.cisco.com/go/psirt and review subsequent advisories to determine exposure and a complete upgrade solution.
  
  In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to upgrade contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release. If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance providers.
