A vulnerability in Security Group Tag Exchange Protocol (SXP) in Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XE Software, and Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the affected device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability exists because crafted SXP packets are mishandled. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending specifically crafted SXP packets to the affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. This vulnerability affects Cisco devices that are running a vulnerable release of Cisco IOS or IOS XE Software with an SXP peer connection configured.
This vulnerability also affects the following Cisco devices that are running Cisco NX-OS Software with support for SXP version 4 (SXPv4):

To determine whether a device is configured with an SXP peer connection, administrators can use the show running-config | include cts sxp command in the CLI and look for the presence of the cts sxp connection peer as shown in the following example:

Devices that are configured with SXP peers in listener mode or both mode are vulnerable. Devices that are configured with SXP peers in speaker mode are not affected.
Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory are known to be affected by this vulnerability.
Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco IOS XR Software.
To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker would need to know the SXP password if an SXP password is configured on the peers. The attacker also must be in a position to do the following successfully:
There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
Customers who are using SXP connection peers are advised to protect them with a password. For more information, see the Cisco TrustSec Switch Configuration Guide.
When considering software upgrades, customers are advised to regularly consult the advisories for Cisco products, which are available from the Cisco Security Advisories and Alerts page, to determine exposure and a complete upgrade solution.
In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release.
